Apple releases new Black Unity collection and content to celebrate Black History Month

Apple is celebrating Black History Month with hand-picked performances and special content that honors the black community and culture. This collection includes a limited edition Apple Watch Black Unity Sport Loop as well as a new watch face and iPhone wallpaper to go well with it.

Starting in February, users will be able to explore brand new activations such as the Smithsonian’s line of Apple Maps Guides, the TV and movie collections of Dr. Jelani Cobb and others. Additionally, through its Racial Equity and Justice Initiative (REJI), Apple is extending its support to five groups whose mission is to empower black and brown communities by fostering creativity through technology.

Apple Watch and iPhone

The word “Unity” is abstractly woven into the Black Unity Sport Loop on the Apple Watch using red, green and black yarns that honor the Pan-African flag, while a special layering of yarns gives the letters the impression of three. – dimensionality. The Unity Mosaic dial also features geometric patterns in green, black, red and yellow. As the minutes change, each number changes to a different form. With the new Unity wallpaper for their lock screen, iPhone users can also show their support.

Currently available for pre-order on apple.com and the Apple Store app, the Black Unity Sport Loop will go on sale for $49 on January 24th at select Apple Store locations (US).

App store

Apps and games that develop innovative solutions for black communities in areas such as music, finance and gaming will be highlighted in the App Store. These apps and games include Dot’s Home, a 2022 App Store Award-winning game designed to inform users about the housing inequities facing communities of color, and financial wellness apps like Goalsetter, Altro, and CapWay, which provide financial resources to neighborhoods. The App Store will also highlight a number of apps that allow users to listen, watch and learn about the importance of this creative movement, past and present, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of hip-hop culture.

Apple Music

Apple Music will highlight the countless ways black musicians and artists have enhanced music and culture across all genres through improvisation, healing, reinvention and more. Users can also listen to new episodes of The Message and other radio shows on Apple Music 1, Country and HITS. The For Us, By Us playlist will be updated to include expressions of resilience and resistance.

Apple TV app

Dean of Columbia University’s School of Journalism and editor of The New Yorker, Dr. Jelani Cobb, has selected a number of TV shows and movies that viewers can watch through the Apple TV app. This year’s collections focus on stories that highlight three distinct pillars: ‘Freedom in Black’, ‘Love in Spite Of’ and ‘Mosaic’. The theme of the collection is “Black Lives Matter”.

Apple Fitness+

Special workouts on Apple Fitness+ will feature songs honoring black musicians, and Fitness+ trainer JoAnna Hardy will lead a new meditation specifically for Black History Month. The new edition of Time to Walk, an audio series featuring some of the world’s most inspiring people, will be available through Fitness+ on January 30.

Apple News

Throughout the month, Apple News will feature engaging articles, interviews and audio stories about the Black experience in America. These stories will include opinion and analysis from renowned journalists.

Beginning February 1, Apple Podcasts will feature shows from Apple Music producers Bridget Todd, Bob the Drag Queen, Monét X Change, and Ebro Darden that showcase the ubiquity of Blackness—the ways in which Black music, media, universes, and theory positively impact. our understanding of the world and each other. Additionally, listeners will be able to peruse their own selection of podcast recommendations selected by Black disruptors.

Apple Books

Apple Books will highlight its Read More Black Authors collection during Black History Month, providing readers and listeners with excellent books and audiobooks in a variety of genres.

Apple Maps

The Smithsonian has developed a series of guides for Apple Maps to highlight significant sites of the centuries-long civil rights movement (1900-1957, 1960-1978, 1980-2020). Users can go through the guide to discover more details about the occasions, figures and places that influenced the country’s history.
